Disney world 5K Race recap

I just ran the Walt Disney world 5K (and 10K and half and full Marathon…) and have a lot to recap! So, I hope you’re carb-loaded and ready for a marathon blog post series all about the Walt Disney world Marathon Weekend. Let’s gooooooooo!

Walt Disney world Marathon weekend Expo

Let’s start with a quick check out to the race expo… this is where you pick up your race number (bib / kit) and tee shirt(s). After you get your stuff you can walk through the expo where tons of vendors sell all things running gear from clothes to technology to costumes. There was also a separate set up for Run Disney merch. I went the first day of the expo and it looked like some things were already sold out. I saw magnetic automobile signs that said 13.1 or 26.2 in the shape of Mickey mouse ears. I wanted a Dopey challenge magnet that had 48.6 miles, but didn’t see any. I asked, but the cast-member said what they had out was all that’s left. There wasn’t an obvious empty spot where a Dopey challenge magnet would have been so I’m not sure if they were sold out or don’t exist.

Everything went quickly at the expo and I got my bibs and t-shirts for the Dopey challenge (I shared ALL the shirts on Instagram here). Then, I said a quick hello to the sparkle Skirt girls. love them! highly recommend you dress up in one of their skirts if you’re running a Disney race or other costume run. trust me.

I’d planned to buy fuel for the full marathon at the expo because I was all out at home and usually order it online, but knew it wouldn’t arrive in time. This is usually no problem-o, but they didn’t have my favorite flavor of gel – Clif Mocha. I usually carry one Clif Mocha Gel and a packet of Clif Margarita shot Blocks. I had to get another brand’s closest flavor – Espresso. *Check out this fuel & my other Running must Haves Amazon list Here*

Quick photo op with the Dopey challenge Medal sign!

There were a few fun photo opportunities in the building with the official Run Disney Merchandise. I skipped this area when I came to the wine and Dine half Marathon expo a few months ago, so I was happy to snap a pic of my Run eat Repeat pose with Mickey and Minnie.

Walt Disney world Marathon weekend – Hotel

After the expo we headed to the hotel to check-in. I needed to get my entire life together for all the miles and early wake-up calls ahead!

I’m doing a separate post on what I ate before the races, transportation, the hotels (I stayed at 2 different ones), etc… after I recap all the races. LMK if you have any questions.

Walt Disney world 5K Race Review

I’ve always wanted to dress up like Merida from brave for a Run Disney race. As a redheaded Mexican, I always felt a lil (okay a lot) weird with this big RED HEAD. It took a long time to love this trait that only 2% of people have and now I only want to be red-headed characters for Halloween or Run Disney Races. (Spoiler alert: I’ve already done Ariel, Anna and Jesse from toy story – so the rest of my costumes this time are non-gingers.)

Anyway.

Merida Run Disney costume Notes

I knew to truly be Merida I’d have to run with my hair down since she has wild, curly red hair. So, I picked the 5K for this costume since it’d be the least amount of time running with my hair down (something I’d never do otherwise).

My hair is very straight so I planned on curling my it the night before, then rolling it up in soft rollers to sleep. I set my alarm for extra early to allow time to take out the rollers and re-curl any pieces that needed a touch-up.

Please note: The race start time is 5AM Eastern Time, but you have to get on the shuttle bus around 3:30AM. So this was aggressively early.

Here’s a picture before I left the hotel…

Aaaaand here’s a picture walking towards the 5K starting line (after getting off the bus from the hotel). note that my curls were already falling out before THE RACE. I’m so glad I spent hours curling it for one hotel lobby photo.

Walt Disney world 5K Race

Pre-Race: The starting line area was well lit, there were a lot of cast members directing runners where to go, and a lot of signs – so everything was easy to navigate. There were a lot of porta-potties too – so no long lines for that.

The 5K Race: This race was 3.1 miles starting outside Epcot. The Mile 2 marker was inside the theme park and the finish line was just outside. The 5AM start time = the entire race was before sunrise. So, parts of the course were pretty dark. I tried to take a lot of video for my recap, but a lot of it was way too dark to really show you the course. I made a short 1 minute recap of the 5K you can see on my Instagram @RunEatRepeat

The 5K course is flat. The corrals, starting line and finish line are well organized. The race started on time. overall everything was great.

Run Disney races are known for their fun atmosphere, community and photo ops. This 5K run definitely had that! There were photo opportunities with characters and at a few terrific photos in Epcot.

Since the race was so dark I didn’t get many good photos before, during or after the run… so I decided to buy the official race photos. They’re pricey but…

a.) the entire race weekend is a lot of money and something I’ll only do once so I want the memories

2.) a big part of the reason I decided to do the Dopey challenge was to blog / vlog it on RunEatRepeat.com to share all the tips, tricks and info with other runners thinking about doing it

c.) I woke up before 2:30AM EST time to curl my hair and run 3.1 miles in a diy costume – and I need photo evidence as a reminder to myself to make better choices… (hair choices, life choices, etc.)

This finish line photo is a lil blurry but has a Mickey mouse photo bomb so it’s also a lil amazing.

After the race I got a picture with my 5K medal, got my gear check bag and headed back to the hotel. I think I was on the shuttle before 6:30AM!

Run Disney posts to check Out

I am Merida from Brave  – I actually made this after the race. I got back to the hotel and re-curled my hair. It still didn’t stay. Womp womp.

When leaves Attack!

Hello! This morning something happened to me on my run that’s never happened before. It’s not a big deal, but after 10 years of running/jogging/slogging it was just random to have a little leaf get stuck under my shoelace. It made me laugh and think, “I’m just glad I didn’t fall today…” (which is what normally happens when I’m not paying attention).

After breakfast I headed to my mom’s for a few errands I have to take care of over here. It’s about a 45-60 minute drive and I didn’t listen to any music or radio the whole time.

That reminded me that I drove home from palm Springs on Sunday in silence too. Is that weird? It’s about 2 hours, which is the usual length of a long run for me so I guess I’m used to just hanging out with my brain movies?

After my errands I was super hungry and of course went to raid my mom’s fridge. I’m really glad they bought a trailer so the neighbors can’t see me through the window. I’m like the Tazmanian Devil eating up all their food!

My mom finally bought adult Gummie vitamins so I’ll stop eating my lil brother’s. Thanks!

It’s so gorgeous here I ate outside. California Love.

(Plus a cereal buffet.)

Last night I had a Lean Cuisine for dinner and wanted to share a reminder to put them on a plate. It looks so much fancier and delicious this way!

On the flip side, I ate my salad out of the container today because there was room to add toppings, shake it up and attack! plus I wasn’t dirtying any extra dishes and since I’m at my madre’s I try to keep it cleaner than at home.

Check out my Lorna Jane Journal Giveaway!

Question: Do you ‘plate’ your meals or just eat them out of the container/pan/box?

I try to, but it doesn’t always happen.

Dinner Salad

I think all entree salads ought to be big HUGE. and I love making my own salads and throwing any and all random fridge goodies best in ? There is something so satisfying about throwing all your produce in one big bowl and everything melding well.

The highlights of today’s mix included spinach, tomatoes, salsa, onions, beans, cheese and tortilla chips. For some reason I love tortilla chips, but could take or leave potato chips.

Mid-afternoon I had a piece of bread with PB&J (no pic) and some popcorn. For some reason I have been craving popcorn because my layover in Atlanta on Friday – I think I passed by some place that smelled like it.

Running Hiatus – yesterday was the first time because I was banned from running that I actually wanted to run. I haven’t missed it much because I can’t run outside in MD best now and really don’t delight in the treadmill. So, the timing is at least good for this lay-off.

Yesterday as we were driving through CA with the sun shining I thought, “I wish I could opt for a run tomorrow…”

Boo. I am really really sad about not being able to run, but I just haven’t let myself think about it. Up until now I’ve been distracting myself with new gym classes and knowing it’s so cold out makes me want to stay inside anyways.

But, today was rough and I am very depressed about not being able to run. I am frightened I am losing fitness and that running will be unpleasant when I start again.

Okay, that pity party is over.

I am still really exhausted today. I guess I am still recovering from vegas ?

Totally.Worth.It.

Macros 101 with Tina Haupert – episode 137

If you think Macros is short for Macaroni and Cheese or if you need a review of what macros are and how paying attention to them can help you achieve a healthier balanced diet – listen closely because this episode is packed with info! before we get to talking about Macros 101 with Tina Haupert from Carrots n Cake  – let’s warm up…

Check out show notes & resources pointed out on today’s episode on RunEatRepeat.com

Run eat Repeat Podcast episode 137 – warm Up:

Hello!! I hope you’re having a great day and are ready for a great run. I have a great show for you today – but

First I do want to give a lil disclaimer… I used to talk about weight loss a lot on Run eat Repeat. losing weight was originally one of my main goals. and I think part of what made my site so successful was the fact that I was a real, relatable girl struggling with my weight and ready to share my journey online.

It’s wild to think about now because even though everyone has a social media presence now and tons of people can be considered influencers… the greatest instagram and tik tok stars aren’t sharing the genuinely awkward and embarrassing stuff.

Yes, a lot of people share unflattering pics now and label them as ‘being real’ or Instagram vs. real Life. but one picture of the fact that you have cellulite isn’t the same as admitting you started binge eating in college and have struggled to stop for years – to the point where you made a decision to go to therapy because it was taking over your life.

It seems off topic but it’s related… I’m saying this because even though there are tons of articles on Run eat Repeat that are very embarrassing – from the way I talked about food and my body to the tragic photography. but it’s real AF.

It’s over-sharing, awkward, embarrassing – and it was all part of my very long journey to weight loss.

And when I lost weight I continued to talk about food and weight – I think in a healthy way. I found a good balance to running and eating and I maintained my weight loss for a long time. Of course I got tons of questions about it – so I wanted to keep talking about it.

But – I also realized part of what caused me to hate my body in high school… which led to diets… which led to binge eating… – part of what caused that was diet culture.

Glorifying diets and weight loss and certain sizes of bodies – that’s all part of diet culture. and I didn’t want to support that anymore. It made me feel bad!

And I got to a place where I unapologetically didn’t follow anyone who made me feel bad about my body or what I ate.

Over the last few years I’ve been through a lot and one of the good things about that is I’ve become self aware. I’ve had to identify my triggers with dating and friendships and social media to maintain my mental health.

So I stopped talking about diet challenges and weight loss because I didn’t want to activate anyone.

But this has always bugged me because I know a lot of you want to know how I lost weight in a healthy way and maintained it. and I know I can talk about having a balanced diet in a healthy way. knowing your body and nutrition needs is so crucial for marathon training!

When I figured out my fueling plan for full marathons – it changed my running and I got a lot faster and was just happier because I felt better and it was a lot more fun!

That is why I asked Tina to be on the show today – I thought that this would be a good way to start talking about nutrition in a healthy way. We’re not talking about diets or weight loss – we’re talking about macros and how a balanced diet can help you feel better and run better.

This is a great place to start if you’re not very informed on nutrition and it’s also a great review if you want to check-in with yourself and your current diet.

Macros 101 with Tina from Carrots n Cake

Before we get to the interview – I want to tell you about Tina. I’ve known her for years and her blog Carrot N Cake was one of the first ones I ever read. She used to blog 3 times a day with updates on what she was eating. I found it fascinating because she’s from Boston and me being from southern California, I think everything about that area is so interesting and different from my lil world.

To give it to you straight – Tina created one of the most popular blogs of the time. She’s very modest, but she was and still is a big deal. We met on some blog trip years ago and she’s one of the nicest girls I’ve ever met on a trip like that. We’ve been friends ever since.

Now related to today’s topic – Tina has tons of experience and knowledge about fitness and nutrition. She is a functional Diagnostic Nutrition professional (FDN-P), certified Nutrition Coach. She’s also an author and her most current book was just about to come out when we spoke – so we mention it at the end.

I’ll put links to her Instagram and web site in the show notes on Run eat Repeat.com so you can check it out there. now let’s get to the interview…

Macros 101 – We discuss:

How do they relate to a healthy diet?

Why must a runner care about macros?

But let’s talk about every second of my day including what I ate and wore and la-di-da…

I slept in ProCompression Socks last night because I can. sexy lingerie’s got nothing on compression gear. (Use ‘RER’ for 40% off!). vegas insists on photo-bombing my life away.

I had to get a few things done before my run so the sun was shining down on me pretty hard by the time I was finished with my 10 miler. I discovered my shadow and stopped to take a running pose picture.

The sun’s angle can distort your shadow certainly – notice how my bottom half looks bigger than my top (which it is in real life, but not to this degree).

But then notice, MY huge HEAD (not in the conceited way, count on me). I seriously have the most significant head (and hands and feet). I am self-conscious about my massive head and face and feets and hands because I think it’s pretty apparent that they are larger than they ought to be for a girl that’s not a WNBA player. Like, I feel like the nail lady at the beauty salon is going to charge me extra one day for all the extra lotion and nail polish they have to use on me…
