Animal study finds Microscopic brain changes After only 10 repeated Subconcussive impacts

A recent study was published looking into whether brain changes were obvious after only a handful of repeated subconcussive impacts finding the answer is yes.

In the recent study, titled Repetitive sub-concussive impacts induce inflammation implications for innocuous head impacts in sports, the authors conducted a series of experiments on rats. They created a device to cause sub Camiseta SL Benfica concussive impacts. In one group of rats no impacts were received. In a second group only one impact was received. The study’s abstract reads as follows:

They were subjected to SC or RSC using a modified Marmarou impact acceleration injury model under anesthesia. SC or RSC impacts consisted of dropping a 50-gram brass weight from a height of 40 cm onto a metal disc (helmet) taped to the scalp. The animals were sacrificed 7 days post-impact, and their brains were perfused with 4% paraformaldehyde. representative sections encompassing the hippocampus were processed by immunohistochemistry for assessing microglial and astrocytic proliferation changes using IBA (Ionized Calcium-binding Adaptor molecule) as the marker. four sections from each brain 500 microns apart were taken from the left and ideal sides of each section encompassing the CA1 region of the hippocampus. Our results support that RSC induced a significant increase in microglial proliferation compared to SC and sham animal groups (p< 0.05). The full study can be found here. Why I Ate Raw chicken

I am really the worst today. I think it’s because today is a rest day from running so I didn’t get to run the weirdo out of me this morning. I did a quick 30 minute lower body workout and then made breakfast. and that’s when my first fail of the day happened …

I tossed out my toaster a while back because I figured I could use the broiler in the oven to toast stuff. This has worked okay in the past. It’s not always terrific because it goes from cold to burnt to a crisp if you’re not standing right there checking it the whole time.

I don’t mind burnt toast, but this was completely charred. Boo.

Where do you go when you burn the last roll? In the closet to hide (or still eat it in the privacy of your room).

Not really, I made something else and tried to give this to the cat. Oddly, he didn’t want my super burnt bread. Shocker.

The rest of the day was productive. I got a ton of work done, ran a few errands and even got vegas this box (from Costco).

By this time it was about 4pm, too early for dinner but I was HUNGRY. I snacked on some sugar snap peas with hummus but knew I wanted something more substantial. I put a frozen chicken nugget in the microwave for a minute, squirted ketchup on it and devoured. The inside was a little cold in the middle, but yeah that happens. Don’t you hate when the outside of your food is super hot but the inside is still frozen?!

I ate a few more bites of it cold but  decided to put the rest back in the microwave. That’s when I realized the middle was not only cold but also completely pink. It was RAW. The chicken was raw!

I thought it was weird, but maybe just processed chicken and maybe just dark meat?

 

Meh. I didn’t think it was that big a deal until I took a second look and confirmed it was completely raw chicken. The frozen chicken nuggets are not cooked and need to be baked.

I took the package out of the freezer and realized – yep, I made a substantial stupid mistake. It’s totally my fault, but I just assumed they were microwaveable pre-cooked nuggets. way to go Monican.

So now I am freaking out because I ate raw chicken and I might get salmonella and super sick and die. I might be up all night with the runs (not the marathon kind). I might turn into a salmon and wake up tomorrow with fins (I think that’s what happens when you get salmonella).

I am so mad at myself for being so dumb. I could really get sick. now I wait for the rumble and see what happens….

First let me back up a step… I got into Maine very late Thursday and took a cab to the Inn. We stayed at Higgin’s beach Inn and it was the cutest!

I woke up and took a walk down to the beach on Friday, but it was drizzling so I headed back pretty quickly.

We had breakfast at Higgin’s. They had really good food! ( I had lunch there later too.)

Then, we piled in the cheese van and headed to the press conference for the beach to Beacon 10k. I made a ton of cheezy jokes on the way

This is the most significant road race in Maine and a very popular one too! There were A lot of elite runners. The race sold out in under five minutes this year.

I found Ryan Hall and Meb best away, but tried to act cool. (Tried is the essential word there. I was probably much more like an 8 year old girl meeting One Direction.)

After the conference the elites Camiseta PSV Eindhoven were available to for questions and pictures. I got it together and went up to Ryan Hall who was the the nicest!

Run eat MEET… Deena Kastor

Then, I met Deena Kastor! We talked about traveling from CA to ME. It’s a long haul, so I’d like to think we bonded a bit.

Run eat Meet… MEB!!

I feel like I had already met Meb because he hails from just down the way in San Diego. I asked him the most essential questions of the day which is obviously, “What are you going to eat tonight before the race?” He said “Pasta!” pretty excitedly. So we ought to all eat pasta before a race from now on. Do it.

(Spoiler: I ‘ran’ into Meb again after the race! much more on that later!!)

After the Camiseta SS Lazio conference we headed to Ridley farm.

Cabot works with family famers and the company has very strong relationships with the people who produce Camiseta Sao Paulo FC the milk for the cheese. This farm was close to the beach to Beacon race so we were able to visit them and their cows. three Ridley family members ran the race with us too!

 

The Ridley’s are one of the 1200 farm family owners of the Cabot Cooperative who live in new England and new York.  Most of the farms are considered ‘small’ – the smallest one only has 16 cows. I love that this huge company still works with the little guy. For much more information check out the Cabot site here. I learned a lot on this trip, but I’m no expert so check that out for a ton of cool info and a virtual farm tour!

The cows at Ridley farm all have names.  When they are brought in to be milked they walk best to their spot! I wonder if they can read their name or just know where to go…

I am very curious about how farms ‘work’ so it was great to ask a ton of questions. The family is up by 4am to milk the cows each day. They milk them twice a day.

A truck concerns pick up the milk every two days. until then it’s stored in this refrigerated tank.

After hanging out with the cows for a while we had a picnic lunch outside the family’s house. It was awesome to be able to hang out with everyone and experience all the beauty.

I keep saying I want a simpler kinda life one day and I thought something like this would be it – but farming is a ton of hard work. Plus, these family farmers never get a day off because the cows need to be milked and other animals and plants need to be tended to every day. I fell in love with the idea of it though…

And as if all of that isn’t enough – we had dinner HERE. Gorgeous. This picture doesn’t even capture it. Heaven.

I’m tempted. but my friend Leann responded to my announcement to stay in Maine with one word that would scare me away: “Snow.” She knows me well!

A Run to the Farmer’s Market

We started the day with a run before sunrise. I was frightened of Camiseta Selección de fútbol de Bélgica the hills, but we found a pretty flat route and it was fun.  everyone met in the lobby of the Sir Francis Drake to do about 4 miles. We didn’t get nearly enough sleep, but we were in good spirits.

post run we headed back to the room to get ready for the day. four girls, four showers, four heads of hair to fix… implies four times as long to get ready. Actually, we made fairly good time because we wanted to get food!

On our way we did some window shopping…

 

Wait, are those food bloggers for sale?!

Nope. They were just enjoying breakfast at a cafe. 

Meghann, Bobbi, Melissa and I grabbed our cameras and were ready to hit the road!

 

The farmer’s market is in and around the Ferry building.

There are tons of booths with beautiful veggies outside,

But, we heard the world’s best coffee was inside so that was our first stop. 

Blue bottle Coffee Co. is said to have the best coffee around.

No surprise that the secret is out because there were long lines at each of their multiple locations at the market.

I Camiseta Celta de Vigo purchased their “New Orleans style iced coffee”. Sorry, it didn’t have Bourbon in it.

But, it was the most outstanding iced coffee I’ve had to date. Strong, yet smooth  Camiseta Borussia Monchengladbach and perfectly creamy… It disappeared too fast. 

With coffee in hand I was ready for FOOD. By this time I was very hungry and wanted everything. I managed to talk myself out of cookies for breakfast.

Bobbi and I headed outside to see all of our breakfast options. After a loop around the booths we were on a mission for eggs.

I purchased wild mushroom eggs and a baguette from Hayes street Grill.

They really hooked up the mushrooms and every bite was very meaty from the ‘shrooms and flavorul too.

We sat on the bird’s bathroom, I imply benches near the water to delight in our food…

 

With food in our bellies we were ready to stroll around and take in all the sights, smells and sounds of the market. street performers offered music ?

Every booth was teeming with bright colors, sweet smells and delicious samples.

For dessert Bobbi and I shared a vegan, organic pumpkin doughnut. It was deliciously moist and perfectly spiced.

I better start my new hula hoop workout program asap if I want to burn off the calories from all this food!

Now we’re back in the room and I’m icing my knee because it’s a little sore today and I’m wishing to run again tomorrow.

The flight terminal game

pleased Thursday! I’m blogging to you online from 30,000 feet in the air.

This morning I woke up around 5am as well as got out the door for a run. I ran to the gym, did a stamina session as well as back around for 4 miles total.

I took off my MotoAct while I was at the fitness center so it was lying on the floor for 30 minutes. But, for some reason it believes I torched 4,000 calories on that workout?! Not even close.

I made breakfast as well as lunch last night before I went to sleep so it was simple to get on the method out.

Since I ran a half marathon yesterday today I wanted to take it a little easy. But, I still woke up feeling terrific so I chose to do a home workout with FitnessGlo. It’s a site that offers all kinds of online workout classes.

They have everything from Barre and stretch to strength and Cardio exercise classes! 

I think my favorite part of FitnessGlo is that you can choose workouts that are only 5 to 10 minutes long! in some cases that’s all I have the patience for, but I still want to do something ya know?
